Slick

In the project Slick, I examine the possible effects of the BP oil spill on the Gulf Coast. In the summer of 2010, I traveled to Louisiana where I observed the situation firsthand. I shot part of a film short using stop motion animation on several state park beaches and bayous near the worst areas. Many of the oil companies may be “slick” but my film is not. The narrative is loosely based on the Deepwater Horizon accident but veers into fantasy paralleling Japan’ s Godzilla films that addressed nuclear radiation mutations. The film comes with a limited edition book that is printed on rubber gaskets used in petroleum refineries. I also have made the film into an art object displayed on a miniature monitor housed within an oil pipe casing. Throughout 2013-14, my project, including an installation, is traveling in a 1964 Streamline Travel Trailer to art museums and centers throughout Texas.
